Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson said Wednesday that she is “proud” to cast her vote for Vice President Harris instead of former President Trump in the election, now just under a month away.
“I am really, really proud, as a conservative, to have the opportunity to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in this election,” Hutchinson said in an interview on MSNBC’s “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.”
Hutchinson, the former chief of staff to Mark Meadows, was the first White House aide to publicly testify before the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Her testimony offered insight into former President Trump’s actions that day.
She said Wednesday that by speaking up, her party loyalty was a “small price to pay” in exchange for helping the country heal.
Hutchinson added that while she looks forward to backing Harris and her policies in November, she also thinks it’s important for voters to support Democrats in other races.
“And I think it’s also really important to say, for me at least, that I will also be voting for … Democrats in the House and the Senate too, just because I think it is so important that we get past this period of Donald Trump for America to begin healing,” she added.
The former Trump aide said she hopes the Republican Party can refocus on the House and the Senate after the 2024 election and put this period of politics in the past “and we can start rebuilding a better” GOP.
She said, only then, can “responsible policy debates” happen, adding that the focus now must be on “defeating Donald Trump.”
Hutchinson has long said she wouldn’t support Trump’s most recent campaign even though she will remain a Republican.
Since coming forward with her story before the House panel and releasing a book detailing her experience in the White House, she said she’s experienced many threats and even had to flee Washington for safety.
In the recent interview, she highlighted Trump’s character and said the U.S. needs to elect people that will uphold the rule of law and people that children can look up to.
“So, I say to Republicans who may be on the fence, I understand how frightening it can be to potentially break with your party,” Hutchinson said.
“I also understand that there are concerns and very valid concerns about inflation, but Donald Trump and JD Vance cannot be trusted with the Constitution, they cannot be trusted to uphold our rule of law, and they can’t be trusted to enact responsible policy,” she added.
