Bentonville makes USA Today’s list of ‘American hidden gems’

USA Today named Bentonville one of America’s top hidden gems for its expanding arts scene and biking trails.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Bentonville, long known as the birthplace of Walmart and now being recognized as the “Mountain Biking Capital of the World,” is gaining attention as a national and international destination. That recognition grew this week when USA Today named the Arkansas city one of America’s top “hidden gems.”

Despite offering experiences on par with expensive tourist hotspots, the luxury vacation rental service Wander said Bentonville and similar cities remain overlooked by travelers, according to USA Today. 

The report took into account things like how many restaurants, museums, and landmarks each city had, as well as other facts like safety and cleanliness. Out of 10 locations nationwide, Bentonville ranked fifth among the most overlooked destinations. 

“Bentonville has long been a beloved destination by mountain bikers for its year-round trail access, but it’s quickly rising as an arts and culture hub,” USA Today wrote. 

The Wall Street Journal echoed that sentiment in 2023, calling Bentonville “the new capital of cool” for its expanding arts and dining scene.

The city is home to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the Momentary, which draw artists, musicians, and exhibitions from around the world. Several new restaurants and bars, including Wu Zhao and Ryn, have also opened this year, according to our content partner The Bentonville Bulletin.

Other “slept-on domestic destinations” that made USA Today’s list were Tupelo, Mississippi; Athens, Georgia; and Bowling Green, Kentucky, which the report says offers more affordable experiences without large crowds.
