Chery International – Top Things To Know About The Chinese Car Brand
Chery International is the third-largest automaker in China. Here are the top things to know about Chery Chinese car brand.

Chery International, or simply Chery, is a state-owned Chinese car manufacturer headquartered in Wuhu, Anhui province. Founded in 1997, Chery has carved a unique path in China’s automotive landscape, becoming a leading exporter and a key player in the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. Let’s explore Chery’s journey, brimming with facts and figures.

In a market dominated by foreign automakers, Chery emerged in 1997 with a clear ambition: to become China’s top domestically developed car brand. In 2023, Chery sold over 1.8 million vehicles, solidifying their position as China’s third-largest automaker.

Their first car, the Fengyun was based on a Volkswagen SEAT Toledo chassis. The Fengyun’s affordability and practicality resonated with Chinese consumers, propelling Chery’s domestic sales.

Chery’s focus on exports proved fruitful. By 2003, they became China’s leading passenger car exporter, a title they’ve held for an incredible 17 consecutive years (as of 2023). This dominance reflects Chery’s ability to adapt to diverse consumer preferences across over 80 countries, with strong markets in Russia, South America, and South Africa.

Chery’s export prowess continues to impress. In May 2023, they achieved their highest-ever monthly export volume of 74,056 vehicles. This surge reflects the increasing global demand for Chery cars, particularly in emerging markets seeking affordable and reliable options.

In 2007, Chery partnered with Kenon Holdings to establish Qoros, a brand dedicated to developing and selling premium vehicles in emerging markets. This joint venture showcased Chery’s ambition to move beyond budget-friendly cars and compete in the luxury segment.

Another significant partnership emerged in 2012 with the formation of Chery Jaguar Land Rover. This 50:50 joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover allowed Chery to leverage expertise in luxury car production and cater to the growing demand for these prestigious brands within China.

Chery hasn’t limited itself to partnerships. They’ve established a robust global R&D network with over 5,500 employees. This commitment to research and development ensures Chery stays at the forefront of automotive technology and can compete with established global brands.

Recognizing the shift towards EVs, Chery established the iCar brand in 2010. Today, iCar offers a range of electric cars and SUVs, solidifying Chery’s position as a major player in the booming EV market. This strategic move positions Chery to capitalize on the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.
