UAE Strengthens Global Climate Agenda at UN Energy Transition Minerals Panel

The UAE has reaffirmed its commitment to leading global climate action during its participation in the United Nations’ Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM) Panel, held in Nairobi, Kenya. Abdulla Balalaa, the UAE’s Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, represented the nation at the event, where key discussions revolved around the critical role of minerals in the global shift toward clean energy.

The CETM Panel, convened by the UN to address the growing demand for minerals essential to renewable energy technologies, brought together government representatives, industry experts, and organizations. This collaboration aimed to develop guidelines ensuring the sustainable and equitable extraction, trade, and utilization of these minerals, which are vital for technologies such as wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicles.

Balalaa emphasized the importance of fostering international cooperation to advance the transition to renewable energy. He highlighted the UAE’s ongoing efforts to support climate resilience through robust economic opportunities and by addressing the socio-economic and environmental challenges associated with mineral extraction. The UAE’s participation in the panel reflects its broader strategy of aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in advocating for sustainable practices in critical sectors.

During the discussions, Balalaa called for the creation of a clear and actionable roadmap that ensures the responsible use of critical minerals. He stressed the need for innovative, pragmatic solutions that balance environmental stewardship with the economic benefits of green technologies. This approach, he noted, is essential for preventing delays in the global energy transition and ensuring that vulnerable communities impacted by climate change are supported.

The UAE’s active role in the CETM Panel underscores its leadership in climate action on the international stage. Following the success of COP28, the nation is set to continue its efforts, including its co-hosting of the 2026 UN Water Conference with Senegal, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable development.
