Brush fire near Payson closes State Route 87

Both directions of the road are closed, officials said.

PAYSON, Ariz. — A brush fire has closed State Route 87 south of Payson, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Both directions of the road are closed between mileposts 228 and 229, officials said. 

The fire is about 3-5 acres, Tonto National Forest officials said and started when a vehicle got a flat tire. 

There is no timeframe as to when the road will reopen.

State Route 87 is CLOSED in both directions south of Payson.

The closure is due to a brush fire.
