In a big blow to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ on its very first day in Assam, the state police of Jorhat district on Thursday registered a Suo moto case against the organisers of the rally for violating government guidelines regarding the yatra route. According to the police, the yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a non-charted route while it was crossing from Jorhat diverting from its assigned directions.
The sudden diversion in the rally’s route caused disruption instigating the crowd to break the traffic barricades and assault cops on duty, the police said. The suo moto FIR also stated that the rally caused a ‘stampede/riot’ like situation in the area. The organisers led by KB Byjiu were also accused of instigating the crowd with criminal conspiracy.
The police had lodged a case based on a complaint under sections 120(B)/115(II)/143/147/188/283/323/353 r/w section 3 of the PDPP Act.
The Nyay Yatra, which started from January 14 in Manipur, entered Assam on January 18 after traversing Nagaland. The rally is expected to move towards Majuli, the world’s largest inhabited river island on January 19.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday stated that if Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra violates the state government’s guidelines then strict action will be taken.
“Two persons in the planning team of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam intentionally violated the guidelines. They are planning to pass the rally through Guwahati, even BJP does not conduct its rallies through the capital city as it will create problem. If Congress forces to take the rally through Guwahati we will not stop them; instead, we will file a case,” the Assam Chief Minister said while addressing media.
The Chief Minister further stated that the people of Assam will not join the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. “Only one particular community (hinting to the MIYANs or Bangladeshis) is interested in this yatra,” he added.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the first day of the Assam leg of ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ on Thursday claimed that the state perhaps has the “most corrupt government” and the “most corrupt Chief Minister” in the country.
Addressing a public gathering at Haloating in Sivasagar district, where the march entered Assam from Nagaland, the Congress scion slammed the ruling BJP and its ideologue Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for allegedly spreading hatred and looting public money.
“Corruption is rampant in Assam. We all know that perhaps the most corrupt Chief Minister in India is the Assam Chief Minister,” he added.
