The political war of words continues over invitations to the pran pratishtha of Ram Lalla’s idol after the Congress said it will not be attending the inauguration of the Ayodhya temple on January 22. Analysts are saying the grand old party may have committed a blunder going into the Lok Sabha elections.

But, some others said it can also be seen as a brave but risky act or simply taking a stand. The party said it will not be attending the ceremony, accusing the BJP of making the ceremony into a “political project” for electoral gains and asserting that religion is a “personal matter”.

The grand event, however, will be attended by several BJP leaders, including veterans like LK Advani, other political parties and several prominent personalities from film and television, industry, sports as well as seers and scholars.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has also received a formal invite to the ceremony and said it was his “good fortune” to be a part of such a grand occasion. “It is a matter of immense good fortune that I have got the opportunity to be present there on such a grand occasion. This is an occasion to solidify the dignity and purity of this country,” he said.

“After so many years we have rebuilt the symbol of India’s self and we have done that on the basis of our righteous efforts. It’s in a way a declaration to the entire world that India has stood on its own and will now move forward for prosperity and peace in the entire world,” he added.

Invitations have been issued by the Shri Ramjanmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra. Ahead of the event, volunteers of the RSS and its affiliates, including the VHP, have been reaching out to people across India and inviting them to join the ceremony by offering prayers at temples in their neighbourhoods.

In fact, RSS workers embarked on a nationwide door-to-door public outreach programme across the country on January 1. At a three-day meeting of its national executive at Bhuj in Gujarat’s Kutch district in November last year, the RSS had discussed the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and its plans to make the event a “grand success”.
