106-year-old woman celebrates birthday with drive-by parade

Her best advice for those younger than her is to live “a Christian life each day as best as you possibly can.”

CARTHAGE, Texas — Phala Maye Nail is turning 106 years old! So Panola County Nursing and Rehabilitation in Carthage threw a drive-by birthday party Friday to show one of their beloved residents some love.

Her best advice for those younger than her to is live “a Christian life each day as best as you possibly can.”

Phala’s granddaughter Karen Coulter said her grandmother has been in the Carthage-area community her whole life. 

“So I think its pretty special that somebody whose been here their whole life, and our family has been here hundreds of years,” Coulter said. “So to have her continue that legacy and still be here and still be able to share stories and just to be celebrated by her community is pretty special.”

Her granddaughter Shelly Weber said their family is thankful to the people who came out to show Phala love. 

“You know we always say she might outlive all of us. She just keeps going and going and we just love her,” Weber said. 

Her granddaughters says the secret to Phala’s long life is her cooking delicious homemade meals, her love for gardening and farming for all of her food.
