Volkswagen & Xpeng’s First EV To Arrive In 2026: Here Are All The Details

Volkswagen and Xpeng have announced a strategic alliance to develop a cutting-edge electric and electronic (E/E) architecture for future EVs produced in China. The first vehicle to emerge from this high-stakes collaboration is slated for a 2026 launch.

The joint venture will see the establishment of project houses in Guangzhou and Hefei, where engineers from both Volkswagen and Xpeng will collaborate closely. This strategic move is designed to accelerate the development of the new EV architecture, which will underpin all EVs from Volkswagen produced in China from 2026 onwards.

The first vehicles to showcase the new electrical architecture are expected to be two mid-range models, including an SUV. Additionally, Volkswagen is collaborating with SAIC Volkswagen and FAW-Volkswagen to develop the China Main Platform (CMP) for more affordable models. This platform will underpin at least four smaller Volkswagen vehicles.

Ralf Brandstätter, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG for China, said, “For us at Volkswagen, this project is also the next milestone in the consistent implementation of our “in China for China” strategy – with a clear focus on Chinese customers and technological innovations. From 2026, all EVs of the Volkswagen brand in China will be equipped with this very powerful and efficient architecture.”

This partnership marks a significant step forward for both automotive giants. Volkswagen brings its vast manufacturing expertise and market reach, while Xpeng contributes its innovative prowess. 

By combining their strengths, the two companies aim to create more affordable, technologically advanced EVs that cater to the growing demand in the Chinese market.
