Toyota Supra History, Generations & Models: Enthusiasts’ Favourite?
An enthusiasts’ favourite, the Toyota Supra in production since 1978. We take a look at the Toyota Supra’s history, generations, and models.

The Toyota Supra is an iconic sports car, captivating enthusiasts with its powerful performance, instantly recognisable design, and cutting-edge technology. Its ability to cater to enthusiasts is almost unmatched and some modified examples of the Supra are known to produce over 2,500hp!

Since it went into production in 1978, the Supra has undergone several transformations, each generation pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation. In this article, we take a look at the history and generations of the Toyota Supra, from its humble beginnings to the latest fifth-generation model.

The story of the Toyota Supra began in 1978 when the first-generation model, codenamed A40, made its debut. Initially designed as a more refined and powerful variant of the Toyota Celica, the Supra quickly gained popularity for its distinctive styling and impressive performance.

Under the hood, the first-gen Supra featured either a 2.0-litre inline-six or a 2.6-litre inline-six petrol engine. In 1980, a facelift brought with it a 2.8-litre inline-6 that produced 116hp, a pretty modest number compared to the Supras of today.

The first-generation Supra showcased Toyota’s commitment to creating a dynamic and sporty vehicle. This generation laid the groundwork for what would become a legacy of high-performance sports cars.

The second-generation Supra, known as the A60, arrived in 1981 with a more aggressive design and improved performance. Toyota aimed to position the Supra as a standalone model, separate from the Celica, and the A60 reflected this ambition.

One of the defining features of the second-gen Supra was the introduction of electronic fuel injection, enhancing fuel efficiency and overall engine performance. A turbocharged version of the 2.0-litre engine was launched while the 2.8-litre unit now produced 145hp.

In addition to the mechanical upgrades, the second-generation Supra featured a more aerodynamic design, embracing the sleek and angular styling popular in the 1980s.

The third-generation Supra, designated as the A70 debuted in 1986 and represented a significant leap forward in terms of performance and technology. For the first time, the Celica and Supra were two different models. Toyota focused on refining the Supra’s aerodynamics and handling, making it a true contender in the sports car market.

The third-gen Supra featured a variety of engine options — 2.0-litre, 2.5-litre, and 3.0-litre, available in turbocharged and naturally aspirated versions. The turbocharged variant, known as the Supra Turbo, produced an impressive 232 horsepower, showcasing Toyota’s commitment to delivering high-performance vehicles.

The A70 Supra also introduced advanced technological features, such as an electronically adjustable suspension system and an integrated aerodynamic package. These innovations contributed to the Supra’s reputation as a technologically advanced and exhilarating sports car.

The fourth-generation Supra, often hailed as the pinnacle of the model’s evolution, debuted in 1993 with the code name A80. This generation represented a departure from the previous models, featuring a more rounded and curvaceous design.

The heart of the fourth-gen Supra was the legendary 2JZ engine available in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms. The NA GE unit produced 220hp and 285Nm. The twin-turbocharged GTE produced 321hp and 441Nm making the Supra a force to be reckoned with on both the streets and the racetrack.

Highly tuned versions of the fourth generation produce more than 2,500hp! The A80 Toyota Supra quickly gained a reputation for its impressive acceleration and top-tier speed capabilities. Despite its popularity, production of the fourth-generation Supra came to an end in 2002, marking a hiatus in the model’s legacy.

After a nearly two-decade hiatus, the Toyota Supra returned to the automotive scene with the launch of the fifth-generation model in 2019. Collaborating with BMW, Toyota developed the new Supra, sharing its platform with the current-gen BMW Z4.

The Supra features distinctive design elements, such as the long hood, muscular rear fenders, and dual exhaust tips, paying homage to its predecessor. The fifth-gen Supra features a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, producing 382hp and 499Nm. The collaboration with BMW also brought about an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The new Supra can also for the very first be had with a turbocharged inline-4 engine. Featuring a digital instrument cluster, a prominent infotainment system, and advanced driver-assistance features, the Supra set new standards.
