If your car key fob does not unlock your car, the battery is probably dead. Modern cars use remote keys which need working batteries. If the battery is flat, you cannot unlock or start the car. Don’t worry, changing the battery is quick and simple. Follow these clear steps.
Before the battery fully dies, you may notice:
If your car won’t start even after replacing the key battery, there could be other problems. Read about car not starting symptoms and fixes here.
Check your car’s manual for the battery type. Or open the key and read the battery number inside. Buy the same battery at a shop or order it online.
Look for a small screw. Remove it with a tiny screwdriver if needed. Find the notch on the side and gently pry the key open with a butter knife or plastic tool. Do not use sharp tools.
Inside, you will see the battery held by a clip. Carefully remove the clip and lift out the old battery. Note which side is positive (+) and negative (−).
Put the new battery in the same position. Match the positive and negative sides. Fix the clip back in place.
Press the two halves back together. If there was a screw, put it back and tighten it.
Stand close to your car. Press the button to lock and unlock the doors. If it works, you’re done. If not, the key may need reprogramming.
If your key fob still does not work:
Keep a spare battery at home. This simple step saves you trouble when your car key battery runs low. Also, if you notice your car feels slow when driving, read why cars accelerate slowly and how to fix it here.

Yes. Most car key batteries are easy to replace at home with simple tools.
You may not be able to unlock or start your car remotely. Use the manual key or replace the battery.
Usually, no. But if the battery was dead for too long, you might need to reprogramme it.
Check your owner’s manual or open the key to find the battery number printed inside.
