Chery is reviving its popular QQ hatchback, debuting a modernised version at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show. After being discontinued in 2014, the QQ’s comeback could see the affordable and stylish model become a strong contender in the UAE’s compact and budget-friendly car segment.
The original Chery QQ was introduced in 2003 as an affordable choice for young buyers. It quickly gained traction, selling over 1.4 million units before eventually being phased out due to declining sales. Nearly two decades on, Chery believes the market conditions are right for a revival, especially as electric vehicles (EVs) become more appealing in markets worldwide, including the UAE.
The redesigned QQ concept features a sleek black-and-white exterior with contemporary design cues, such as geometric-shaped headlights, a closed front grille, digital side mirrors, and unique ‘+’-styled wheel rims. The car sports a futuristic look with hidden door handles, a high-mounted brake light at the rear, and distinctive ‘Qq’ branding that marks its new identity.
Given the growing interest in small, affordable electric vehicles in the UAE—driven by rising fuel prices, environmental awareness, and government incentives—the new Chery QQ could present an attractive option. The UAE’s expanding EV infrastructure, coupled with residents’ increasing preference for economical city cars, aligns well with Chery’s market approach.
Launching the QQ in the UAE could position Chery to compete directly against popular compact EVs, such as Renault Zoe, Chevrolet Bolt, and the anticipated introduction of models from regional newcomers. If priced competitively, the QQ could appeal strongly to young, budget-conscious drivers and urban commuters seeking sustainable transport solutions.
With Chery’s enhanced design aesthetics and a promising EV infrastructure in place, the UAE market may offer fertile ground for the QQ’s successful return.
